Uber Eats Car Insurance

The thing that catches Uber Eats drivers out is that cover switches on and off with the app. Your private policy stops applying the moment you start delivering for payment, and the platform's cover only picks up during defined parts of a trip. In between sits a gap that most drivers do not know they are carrying.

What Uber Eats drivers insurance covers

App Off: Your Own Policy, Private Use

With the app closed you are an ordinary motorist and your own policy applies normally. This is the only period where a private comprehensive policy is doing the job it was sold to do, and it is worth being clear that it ends the moment you go online for work.

App On, Waiting for an Order

Logged in and circling waiting for a request is the period drivers assume is covered and often is not. You are working, so private use no longer describes what you are doing, while platform cover frequently does not attach until an order is accepted. This is the sharpest edge of the gap.

On a Delivery: Overlapping Cover

Once you have accepted and are collecting or delivering, platform cover is at its widest, but it is still usually third-party liability rather than repairs to your car. Knowing which policy is primary matters at claim time, so keep the trip record.

Food-Specific Damage

Spilled orders, a leaking container on the seat, or a hot bag failing are the everyday claims of food delivery, and they are small enough that most drivers absorb them. Where it matters is interior damage to the vehicle, which is worth checking against your own policy wording.

Being Rated Honestly for Delivery Work

The clean answer to all of the above is a motor policy that knows you deliver, so cover does not depend on which second of a trip an incident happened in. It costs more than a private policy and removes the argument entirely.

Cover, limits and examples shown are general in nature and subject to eligibility, underwriting and the terms of the issued policy.

FAQ

Uber Eats drivers insurance questions.

Speak with our team on 1300 080 323.

Do I need special insurance to drive for Uber Eats in Australia?
Yes. Delivering for payment is excluded from private motor policies, so you need cover that permits it. The platform provides some protection during active deliveries, but it does not replace a properly rated vehicle policy and generally does not repair your own car.
Am I covered while the app is on but I have not accepted an order?
Often not, and it is the most common gap. Your private policy no longer describes what you are doing, and platform cover commonly attaches only once a delivery is accepted. A commercially rated policy avoids the question by covering you throughout.
Does Uber Eats insurance cover damage to my own car?
Generally no. Platform arrangements lean toward third-party liability. Repairs to your own vehicle come from your own comprehensive cover, which is why the vehicle policy is the one that has to be right.
Will my premium rise just because I deliver food?
You will pay more than private use, because you are in traffic far more and stopping constantly. The increase is not usually as large as drivers fear, and it buys certainty. We compare insurers rather than accepting the first loading offered.
